Der Vorname Giulio ist ein Mönchsname, den er sich 1528 zulegte, zuvor hatte er den Vornamen Giorgio getragen. Sein Name ist in italienischer (Giorgio Giulio Clovio) und in lateinischer Form (Georgius Iulius Clovius) überliefert.

More recently, following the reattribution of the Louvre miniature to the Genoese painter Giovanni Battista Castello (c. 1510 69), the present drawing was believed to be a preparatory drawing for the miniature. Castello was sent to the court of Philip II in Spain where he painted miniatures probably from copies after Clovio’s designs.
